Stress Alive - October 2006

I Wish I Was A Watermelon

October 31st 2006 13:01
I wish I was a watermelon. So much so that I have contacted the local educational facilities to see if any offer watermelon lessons. Thus far I have found none, though keep trying. I also have some friends in the agricultural business, so will contact them.

While pursuing this angle, I will also be looking more directly for a watermelon mentor. One who either is or has been a watermelon. I am determined to chase my dream of being a watermelon.

Watermelons are cool. Somewhat turtle-like, with the thick, green, and protective rind. Very hydrated, watermelons. It is quite cool to be hydrated. It is, I understand, the way of thriving nature.

If I were a watermelon, I would be very popular. People like watermelons. I hear them talking about the red, meaty, and lush fruit. How they cannot wait to sink their teeth into them. Yet, I see no indication from the watermelons that this is a painful event. Just a watermlon event. They go through it all the time.

No big.

The little black seeds are like toys for those who would eat me. Kids like to spit them at each other. This can be fun, yet I understand that a responsible watermelon will encourage parents of these kids to be careful not to injure anybody elses' eyes.

Wateremlons seem quite benign. They do not seem to hold grudges or carry out vendettas. They do not seem to get all up in arms about wars and conflict and food that tastes bad and money and even bad dirt.

Watermelons just are. I am uncertain as to just how conscious, and on what level of consciousness, they are. I have been unable to get one to communicate with me. Once, while sucking on a piece of watermelon, I thought I heard a fun little squeak. But, then it was gone and now I cannot be sure.

I may have to go all 'tao' with the dream, and just be with a gang of watermelon. Just sit with them, and see what vibrations emerge as a result of our humanofruit synergy. I don't know if I should do this in the produce section of the grocery store, or buy a gang of watermelon and find a field or something where we can all sit. Without expectations or anything else that may occur in the grocery store.

I wish I was a watermelon. They, it seems, employ and engage simplicity.

WHAT FRUIT WOULD BE YOUR STRESS MANAGEMENT MENTOR?

Hey! You Are Nature!!!

October 30th 2006 12:42
'My body is source of physical nature, and I move with the grace, ease, and integrity of nature.'

So often, in this busy, modern, brainy, hustle-bustle world, we lose sight of our place in nature. We lose sight of the fact that we are nature, and that if we do things to distance us from that reality, we feel dissonance. It is extremely important to replace ourselves within the context of nature.

This is not to say we shall all strip off the shackles of our clothing and other conveniences of modern life. It is to implore that true peace of mind will not occur as long as one is distanced from the very nature that one is.

And, the body which moves us from here to there, from day to day, is nature in it's purest. Remember that, value that, and honor that on a daily basis with a mantra or affirmation.

'My body is source of physical nature, and I move with the grace, ease, and integrity of nature.'

The $1.50 Overcharge

October 28th 2006 13:24
I overheard a telephone conversation. The fellow I could hear was contesting a $1.50 charge on his bank statement. It was clearly the result of what the bank thought was the use of an ATM that was not theirs. The fellow was relentless in letting them know that he had not used any but his banks' ATM.

I initially thought to myself that this guy was getting all worked up over a mere $1.50, But as he continued, I began to marvel at his persistence. He had, apparently, been overcharged before and was being driven by principle at this point.

He seemed to be speaking to a brick wall, yet he would not give up. I decided that he would be my inspirational life lesson of the day.

How many times, out of laziness, have I disregarded seeminly petty grievances because "it just ain't worth it"? How has this accumulated, financially and emotionally, over the years. What if, like the guy on the phone, I had put my foot down even half the time with little irritations and injustices?

Hmmm.

WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THE PETTY GRIEVANCES?

Cutting Your Wings & Paying Your Dues

October 27th 2006 12:10
Anybody who lives in the world has to in some fashion 'pay their dues' as they move through various levels of status, achievement, or simply being. Life has its' lessons, and they are randomly (it seems) hurled our way. No path will go untouched.

These dues are more often than not something other than financial. 'Cutting your wings' does not have a violent hint to it for no reason. When entering a new job, for instance, their is a learning curve that may be emotionally brutal. Frustration, embarrassment, alienation, and shunning, to name a few possible experiences of the unfortunate and often unsuspecting 'newbie

Personal Mission Statement

October 26th 2006 12:42
Are you driven by external forces that keep you bouncing back and forth as if you were in an old '70s pin ball machine? These forces are often vaguely referred to as Stress. Whatever it is called, there will always be external demands and forces moving us one way or another. What dictates how much is what is within--the internal drive that is anchored to values and passion.

In my work with empowering people to thrive rather than simply survive, I have found that the most successful and happy are the ones that create a personal mission statement that is fueled by passion and values

Aaaagghhh!!! Expectations!!!

October 25th 2006 12:17
Are you hard on yourself and others? Expecting the most that can possibly be expected? Approaching a self or other mutilation if expectations are unmet?

Success and Motivational speakers always tell you to set your standards high. To elevate your expectations and then become a walking/talking self fulfilling prophecy

You'll Be A Man Someday

October 24th 2006 13:09
Often parents seem at a loss as to how to prepare an adolescent for becoming an adult in the world. So many lessons to be learned, so much likely frustration and disappointement to be had. Yet, this is the stuff that leads to emotional maturity.

Today, I offer a letter I wrote to my son when he was 14 y/o, as an example of one way to communicate important messages. Though he does not fully understand everything in it, I have suggested that he take a look at it from time to time, and to please ask me for further explanation if he feels so inclined

I Hear Voices

October 23rd 2006 12:21
What voice do you hear in the morning?

Though many may not intend to, we all at some point or other have 'the voice' that either berates us or boosts us up. In this hectic day and age, it's not uncommon to wake up in the morning with the "oh my god, will I get to that appointment on time, and if I do will I be all that I can be, and if I'm not will I survive the consequences, and if I do what will happen next"...ad nauseum. A bit unpleasant, and just not the way to start the day

Something a bit different today. I wrote this little piece on 9/11/2006 as commeration of that tragic American day. Yet, I think the message may be timeless, and wish to offer it up on this Sunday. So that we are reminded of all peoples who suffer, experience, and endure tragedy and hatred.

Even I acknowledge that I don't take things seriously. At least not all the time. I'm a clown and a jester. Always have been, always will be.

My analyst would likely tell me I am running from the darkness within, and it may very well be. Or my 'life coach' might tell me I am running from something out there in the world. That may very well be true

You Cannot Kill Time!!

October 20th 2006 11:08
"I'm a slave to time." "I can't stand it when I waste time." "We're just hanging out, killing time." "So much to do, so little time." And the proverbial, "If I could put time in a bottle".

So many people experience time as if it were a precious commodity that has the power to make or break our will, our capacity to enjoy, and our liklihood to succeed (whatever it is that that may look like). Time stress seems to be a uniquely human event, and one that has the potential to result in many unfortunate and often-times unanticipated consequences

I Don't Think, Therefore I Am Not

October 19th 2006 12:15
I wonder if too much has been made of being a mindful, thinking, and cogent person of reason. I mean, this abstracting brain that we have been blessed/cursed with seems quite the infant in the overall evolution of things.

We think on this, and over-think that. We rationalize one behavior, while justifying another. We (mis)interpret others motives relative to our own capacity for meta-think. And, contrary to our seeming self importance, we get it wrong at least as often as we get it right

Saving Grace

October 18th 2006 13:08
How many times have you found yourself feeling and acting in a way that suggests you are not in good management of yourself? All too often, if you are like many others. From this state will emanate a sense of 'not quite rightness' or seeming to be 'leass than all that you can be'.

It is a state of being that diminishes the quality of life, and it need not be as prevalent as it may be in your world

Are you ready for the eventual crisis

Stop! No! Never! Can't!

How often these words are spoken. To children, friends, partners, colleagues, students, employees, and more. "Get real", one may say to another, "there is no way that you will be able to do that."

Uh, thanks for the, er...affirmation and vote of confidence

Thunder & Lightning & Awe, Oh My!

October 13th 2006 16:40
Recently, as I was driving from Big Town to Little Town along side the Pacific Ocean, I was witness to a marvelously awesome display of Natures’ beauty and power. The roaring thunder and magnificent bolts of lightning remained fairly constant and active for the duration of my thirty-minute drive. I pulled over to the side of the road several times so that I could more comprehensively absorb what I was experiencing without becoming a distracted hazard of the road.

Besides the powerful splendor, I was struck by how much awe was generated by this skyful display. Quite humbling, actually. My smallness relative to this grandeur

So Serious, This Life

October 13th 2006 13:02
I become irritated when this thing called life makes me get serious. As if there are things more important than kicking it, having a good time, laughing, and the like. That's my default--ease.

Yet, there are these other things in the soup. Money, sickness, politics, religion, meaning of life, hatred, laws, and all other things that interrupt the easy-going way of being. I really don't have time for all that. I mean really, what's the point

It's Only Failure If You Don't Learn

October 12th 2006 11:41
How exciting it can be to gather up the conviction to set a crucial goal and then direct the energy and focus to accomplish the feat. Invigorating and stimulating and all about being IN life.

You get yourself in your zone, you are charged up and prepared, and you start your mission. You make a bit of progress and it is good. Still on track, and moving toward your designated target

Judging Yourself

Well, STOP IT

How much alienation, anomie, anxiety, and disintegration must a person endure before the decision is made to seek change? Change, not on a micro- level, but on a macro- level.

While it is easier to create personal changes than social adjustments, such individual work can take a lifetime. Keep a person very busy and focussed on Self

Crisis Breath

October 10th 2006 12:09
Have you ever watched an infant? Not necessarily the most exciting thing to do unless, of course, you are the parents of the infant. Parent or not, an infant can teach adults some pretty amazing things. Take breathing, for example.

When sleeping or in an otherwise hypnogogic state, you will see that the little one breathes slowly and deeply. A rhythmic, non-forced weaving of inhales and exhales. This state is disrupted by the crises of hunger, pain, fear, and fecal discharge. At these points, our little infant becomes disturbed, starts to wriggle about, perhaps cry, and begin to BREATH IN A MORE SHALLOW AND FAST-PACED manner. This is CRISIS BREATH. It lasts as long as the ‘crisis’ persists, and breathing returns to steady state upon restoration of the non-crisis way of being

Oh My, It's Monkey Mind!!

October 10th 2006 11:50
I love it when the time comes to lie down and rest my weary mind and body in the comfort of my own bed. Going horizontal so that my muscles no longer need to work, and closing my eyes so that I can literally feel the relief as they rest and re-moisturize.

Ah, yes. Rest. A time for that ‘end-of-the-day’ inner dialogue

When Stress Was My Foe

October 9th 2006 15:46
Back in the day, there were many things that could lead me to being upset. My shoe coming untied, or my path to work being impeded by someone elses' unfortunate accident on the road. My meal not being as hot as I would like it to be, or somebody questioning my thoughts on this or that issue.

All these were upsetting--little molehills that would become mountains simply because of how I allowed myself to experience the stress of life. Little everyday events and occurances, all given grandiose meaning in my naive understanding of what being alive in the world was all about
