All Work & No Play

October 16th 2006 17:03
All work, no play
Such a price to pay...
All work, no play
Better change your ways.

Do you ever wonder why some people never seem to play? Work, work, work. Toil and labor, and "gotta get this done". As if there is never enough time to recreate let alone relax.

Work so hard, work so long...
Must be tough and must be strong...
Please tell me there's another way!

While recreation is different than relaxation, there is a huge benefit to incorporating recreation (aka--play) into our overall routine. When engaged in play, we are not relaxing. The reason it feels like relaxation at times is because if we are absorbed in our play activity, our focus narrows on the activity at hand. Thusly creating a myopia such that many (if not all) the other nitter- natter that occupies our minds is no longer commanding our attention. At least, for the time being.

This is not unlike how attention deficit disorder or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder drugs work. They do not technically slow a person down. They simply help a person focus on the one task at present hand.

Play is also important, at least for children, because it is one major way that they learn how to be in the world. "Oops, that hurt, don't think I'll do that again" "Oh, I see if I do that, then she will be nicer to me, Hmmm..."

And, play is fun. Fun, I say. What a great thing to inject in a hectic, work-based, toil-based, hum-drum routine that moves one from waking to going back to sleep 18(ish) hours later.

Of course, there are also those who are more about all play and no work. This is problematic too. These puers and puellas may be the eternal children so often spoken of by the neo-mythologians.

Balance may be the key. Work, play, rest. Work, play, rest. Not necessarily in that order. Yet, work, play, rest.

Make this your new mantra, and you will enhance the quality of your life.

WORK - PLAY - REST

DO YOU PLAY?

For some people, work is something they want to drench into... The workaholics.

Drenching into work. Interesting way to put it. And yes, so often workaholics.

I must say, there ae people who have woven work and play and life purpose all into a cohesive and meaningful and enjoyable path.

I envy them.

yes... me too. I am still waiting for that magic moment which makes work as enjoyable as play.

Its so easy to "work what you enjoy", but very hard to implement in real life.

You've given me the taste for a Mars Bar now I must say.

And what's that other saying..... "All work and no play , makes Jack a dull boy."

Would that be a Mars bar with almonds?

Mars Bars- chocolate bar made of chocolate-malt nougat topped with a layer of caramel and covered with milk chocolate.

The Mars Bar I'm talking about doesn't have almonds, but I believe in the U.S. it was released as a Mars Snickers, complete with almonds. (Are they just on top or all through it?)

The reason it made me feel like one, is that their sloganover here is "Work, Rest & Play". I don't know if they use the same one over there or not???

Oh, I see. It is different here. No slogan like that.

I think the almonds are just on top. Mmm.
