I Don't Need No Stinking Doctor!

December 14th 2006 14:04
So many people have such great fear of going to the doctor and hearing what the "bad news" is that they don't go at all. Though this position makes no rational sense, it is quite common. Rather than see the information that the doctor gives out as an important piece that will lead to the possible cure, these angst-ridden pre-patients see the bleak and gloomy diagnosis as something to be avoided.

Otherwise known as putting one's head in the sand.

In many cases, the feared diagnosis is ruled out by virtue of the medical exam. But, in the worst case scenario of finding that indeed a dire medical circumstance exists, then the information will lead to the needed treatment.

Quite simple, eh? Not when dealing with deep-rooted fears of the psyche. A classic example of mis-managed stress!

Sad, that.

i agree. people act like they have lived forever and are going to live forever more. let's drop the pretense because our atoms are going to be moving to other entities.

we don't have a say when the day comes when our journey as a human ends and we move onto the next higher physical form.

Dr D,

... may I call you D...?... I am sick, no seriously... I am... I have a deep rooted fear of success!

I have managed failure in the most spectacular ways, no problems... but lately, whilst on the verge of attaining everything I have ever wanted in my life, I find I have a deep rooted fear of pushing through the last little inch to gain the success that is mine to have...

What can I do....to speed up the process?

D, I always thought that I couldn't be bothered to go to the doctor, but, at some point, I think you're right... men especially don't want to be told that we're breaking down.

After all, we believe that we wear a suit of invincibility, right?

Hi Lilla. I've often wondered about the fear of success and in many cases have decided it is really a fear of failure. Though it is not really possible to go into details of your situation in this context, I can say some things generally.

If it were fear of failure, then I often have clients take a look at what failure means to them. And, re-defining in a more realistic way often opens up doors, and thusly a 'different energy'. If it is fear of success, that often means a dis-ease with change. Moving beyond one's comfort zone of what they have become accustomed to.

And sometimes, it is as simple as one not truly wishing to move to what others have identified as success, so stalling, procrastinating, and otherwise derailing the externally defined path to success.

Hope this offers some insight that you can apply to your world.

Too true, Cibbuano. I am not so sure it is just men, though maybe mostly. Never good news to hear that we actually are in either a slow or quick process to our ultimate demise. Old brain says FLEE from this! New brain, with it's abstracting capacity, can over-ride the more gut instinct, but it is difficult.

Deorre,

I think you hit it on the head with this comment :

I am aware that success requires a sacrifice, something I must give up in order to have the other, 'better' thing.... but for what purpose...? Who says anything is better... what are my values, parameters, feelings on what is better...? you must give up time for money, or money for time....fine balancing act....

Thank you so much, I belive you have given me enough here, to be able to eventually shift the lbalance constructively and within parameters of 'living with myself' after I have done so.

with appreciation...
