Dead Man Hanging

January 3rd 2007 23:16
Many have seen the actual footage of Saddam Hussein being noosed up and then dropping to his dangling death. Quite intense, this.

This post is not about whether or not it was the right or wrong thing to do. Nor is it about what the liberals or conservataives have to say about it. I choose to come at it from a stress management perspective.

I have two concerns, essentially. Firstly, such sights in freeze frame or video format are so intense that they cannot help but have an indelible impact on many a fragile or otherwise less-than-sturdy psyche. In some cases this can translate into short term distress, and in other cases it can translate into a more insidious post traumatic stress disorder. Replete, I might add, with nightmares, difficulty sleeping, loss of focus and sense of reason, and possibly depressive symptoms.

Secondly, I am concerned with the possiblilty of how many individuals have become so 'numbed' by such demonstrations in their viewing rooms that it is really 'just another killing' on the tube. Not unlike that good drama that was seen the night before last. A dangerous sense of detachment from the severity of the event seems perilous and callous and a move away from celebrating the wonder that is life.

I ask all who witnessed the lynching/excecution to take a close look at where you are at emotionally, and do the needed processing if indicated. I also ask all parents that you pay attention to how your children are processing the event, whether they saw it or not.

Peace be with you.

It's very interesting to read about his execution from a stress point of view. I haven't seen the footage, but I will admit that I did have a nightmare about it the other night. The whole incident has seemed so surreal.

Hello Nina.

It is probably quite normal to have a nightmare of such a publicized event of such a villified man. I only suggest that you monitor yourself and if it persists, talk to someone. A friend, a therapist, or whomever.

I don't know what made me watch that sick video. Now I feel sorry for Saddam, and think I am sick for watching it in the first place. I found the people around Saddam to be worse than him. I guess there are lots of sicko's running around

It can be very compelling. Like a train wreck. Sometimes, though, the stuff is so insidious that it may be damaging.

I didn't watch the hanging and don't intend to. I don't like thinking about such things, and for the most part with me it's like it never happened.

You certainly minimize any internalized stress that way, Ethan. I'm glad that works for you. There is so much inundation of such things, it's a wonder anybody can stay away from it.

Hi Deorre,

I avoided the video and never intend to watch it. Just because someone is vile doesn't mean I should watch them suffer.

What also disturbed me was the thought of the Steve Irwin death 'video' (didn't watch this one either)...though the ones floating out there must be fake b/c yesterday it was on the news that all copies of the actual video were destroyed except for one given to his widow by the video maker.

I've not seen either death video either, Peg. Don't see the point or need, though just what I know of suggests it is very intense. Likely too much for most psyches to be exposed to for too much.

you pose an interesting question about the numbness factor in regards to immunity to violence. recently the u.s. had pass the 3000 death mark of service people, not to mention the thousands upon thousands of iraqi's that have perished.

are the public immune to these deaths because they aren't exposed to it in anyway? and does the cold numerical reporting without putting a human face on the casualties of both sides detaches us from the consequences of war and violence?

Though we rarely see graphic pictures, there seems to be an unspoken awareness of what is going on over there. I think this can only have a negative impact down the road if left unackowledged or unprocessed.
