All Of Those Mistakes!
February 4th 2007 00:43
In my coaching and consulting work I don’t typically encourage clients to focus too much on mistakes, failures, and other such ‘non-positive’ events. These can distort the path that a particular individual or company has envisioned or set as an ideal or goal. “Go with strengths, and build upon them synergistically” goes the mantra. There is much value to this approach.
I have recently become involved in a project that is essentially about helping individuals take ownership of their past mistakes and “failures” such that they may learn and not repeat their past in some new-age version of the Sissiphyssian expression of fate. You know, doing the same thing over and over again, never moving beyond that particular path.
It’s only failure, by the way, if you do not learn.
In this project, I have decided to take a look at my life, and identify ‘tipping points’ where I made mistakes that have impacted the direction of my life. Not little mistakes like putting too much mustard on my salami sandwich. No, big mistakes. Like, for instance, choosing a career path of least resistance rather than risking and efforting in the spirit of feeding body, mind, heart, and soul.
I will be posting on individual “mistakes” I have made that have had significiant impact on the direction I have moved from one day to the next, one month to the next, and one year to the next. I suspect the work will empower me by being a part of the ‘letting go’ process.
I also, as another part of the project, invite ye citizens of Blog to share mistakes you feel you have made and the impact they have had on your lives.
As Hillary recently said in her chat room, “Lets chat.”
Do you think we can grow from our mistakes, or is it possible that dwelling on such will simply feed a destructive toxicity?

I would be very interested in more information on not repeating mistakes. I tend to repeat mine in various disguises and even though I can now recognise that, which has been half the battle (as they say), I'd love some tips in learning more about it.
As I was abandoned early by both parents, I have learnt the hard way, and I've made huge mistakes in my life, many that will impact on my life, perhaps for the rest of it...
I find this subject fascinating, because we are also taught that we learn the most from our mistakes and I truly believe that when I am on my deathbead, they will be the only thing I can truly call my own.
More information on this subject...Please!

I think one of the biggest mistakes I ever made was not having the courage to ask questions about certain things and now it is too late to get answers. As a result I have stumbled along trying to figure it all out and sometimes wonder if there is really any point in doing so.
What I find one of the most annoying things is that everyone says you cannot live in the past, yet actions of the past impact your life in the future so how can you just simply 'move on' from them? I don`t get it. I realise there are some that you can - if you touch the hot water you burn yourself. You learn that hot water burns. You don`t do it again. Some things just aren`t that cut and dried though.
Look forward to more posts on this.
