Mountains & Molehills
July 2nd 2007 19:19
Do you find that your world is filled with unacceptable clutter, clang, busyness, stress, expectation, faux hope, or other such experiences that tend to collect themselves into mountains that become bigger than seems healthy? Do you find yourself longing for the benign molehills that, while pesky, seemed significantly more tolerable than the mountains they have grown to be?
Ah yes, longing for molehills. Perhaps I feel a song coming on.
Do you find yourself responding constructively to the mountain that once was a molehill? Actually, if you were responding constructively, the molehill probably would not have graduated into a mountain. Do you organize, prioritize, commit to act, plan, problem solve, and otherwise initiate an intention to resolve the very issues that at times define you?
And, if the issue has evolved into a self definition, might it be a bit self destructive to attempt to resolve said issue? Damn, this stuff can get complex.
More often than not, the 'answers' I provide for people are simply me evoking thought within those very people. Asking questions, stimulating relection, and moving toward personal clarity. Remarkable what a stream of consciousness and reflection and personal awaremness can be generated with a touch of motivation and a scoche of prodding.
Remarkable, too, how easily many mountains can be transformed into moleshills.
Do you have clarity, by design? Or, is your style more of a knee-jerk approach to whatever stimuli and stress emerges in your path? How do you manage your molehills such that they do not become mountains? Or, do you enjoy a good ski run down the mountain of life?

Nice post and comments.
In many ways life DOES get easier as one ages. It's just regrettable that we need witness the young getting it so wrong, and, sadly, not knowing it.

This is a good question. I tend to think of things as mountains and I'm trying to make them smaller into molehills. Then it's less stressful and easier to obtain. After all, we are our biggest critics (speaking for myslef) and we can change how we look at things (with awareness of course).
I often don't have awareness and automatically hop into a 'have to do that now' mentality. Therfore I get frazzled, grunoy and overwhlemed. But...a couple of times lately, I've stopped myself and asked 'what will happen if I do that slower and even another day?" Of course there are some things that are imperative and need to be done quickly but there are many other things that can be done better and with less anxiety by placing less pressure on the self. And gosh, does it feel better!

I can procrastinate until things that once were molehills become mountains. And it stresses me. But once I sit down, make a list of what needs to be done, prioritise and start 'getting on with it', it's amazing how quickly it turns back into a molehill!!!!
What gets me is that it usually only takes me a short amount of time to get that mountain out of the way. And I'm left thinking 'well why did I wait so bloody long to do something about it'?
But do I ever learn? Hmmmm........I like to think I'm getting better!!!
