When Stress Was My Foe
October 9th 2006 15:46
Back in the day, there were many things that could lead me to being upset. My shoe coming untied, or my path to work being impeded by someone elses' unfortunate accident on the road. My meal not being as hot as I would like it to be, or somebody questioning my thoughts on this or that issue.
All these were upsetting--little molehills that would become mountains simply because of how I allowed myself to experience the stress of life. Little everyday events and occurances, all given grandiose meaning in my naive understanding of what being alive in the world was all about.
Things are different now. Rather than making mountains out of molehills, a good deal of my time is devoted to making molehills out of mountains. In a sense, 'defusing the stress of life'. I have learned lessons and now I practice what I have incorporated.
I've learned that we humans create more stress than what the world actually throws at us. I've learned that when we sustain certain levels of stress arousal, otherwise known as the fight or flight mechanism, it is very bad for us. I've learned that humor is a great way to attend to and process stress.
And I've learned that stress in not a foe. Stress just is. Not good, not bad. Stress just is.
What we do with it is what becomes extremely significant.
This is a blog where all are welcome to wax philosophical, crack jokes, discuss stress in their own lives, and whatever else is tickled out through the dynamic interchange of the blog-spirit. Stress, its mis-management, its humorous underpinnings, and its manifestations in everyday life are what will weave the content of this blog into a coherent intent.
Ah yes, indeed. When stress was a foe.
