"Take Two Aspirin & Call Me In The Morning"
July 7th 2007 13:51
Such a simple piece of advice, yet often-times so significant and surprisingly effective. What’s that about?!?
Did you know that nearly 70% of ALL doctor visits have a stress-related or psychological component? This is not to say that stress or psychogenesis is the direct ‘A leads to B’ formula. Simply, that somehow and some way psyche has woven its’ way into soma, and it becomes apparent in the medical evaluation.
Interesting, that. And fascinating.
Placebos have often gotten a bad rap. The implication has sometimes been that if a placebo, which is an inert and non-medical ingredient, is effective, then the patient surely must have been “faking it“. Indeed, if the fix is magical, then the problem must have just a bunch of hooey.
I like to see placebos in a different light. To me, they are a reminder of the very significant power and influence of the psyche upon the soma–the mind upon the body. I mean really, if two aspirin suggested by the medical guru is going to leave me feeling better even though they do not truly address the injury, then credit must be given to the relationship that my hopes and expectations have upon my healing capacity.
This is great news, yes? If nothing else, I hope that the very nature of the placebo fix is a reminder that within each of us is a degree of the fix. Now, we may not be able to fully cure ourselves of this malady or that, yet we can summon up our internal resources such that we can make a significant contribution to feeling better.

There is no longer a planet pluto. It was turned into something else last year by a bunch of angry scientists.

I remember my sister once had a headache. She asked mum for paracetamol. Mum put some out for her. About an hour later, Mum asked how the headache was. My sister happily reported that the panadol had done it's job and the headache had gone. Mum then pointed out that the panadol was still sitting on the kitchen bench. My sister had forgotten to take them!
